Home › Insights › Meta Ads in B2B: Why you should choose placements manually
Meta shows you over 25 possible placements when creating a campaign: Feed, Reels, Marketplace, Search, Explore, Audience Network, Messenger, Stories. Sounds like a lot of reach. In B2B, however, it mainly leads to wasted ad spend.
What Meta's automatic system does with your budget
The default setting, "Advantage+ Placements," automatically distributes your budget across all available ad placements simultaneously. Part of this ends up in inventory that's simply ineffective for B2B messaging and in formats your ad was never designed for. The budget gets diluted, and worse still, the data the algorithm learns from is also compromised.
The four placements that are sufficient in B2B
My basic B2B setup is radically simple. I manually select placements and activate exactly four: Instagram Feed, Facebook Feed, Instagram Story, and Facebook Story. That's it. These are the platforms where your target audience actually scrolls attentively and where your ad formats are displayed cleanly.
The more suggestions you reject on Meta, the better your account performs.
The principle behind it
I've adopted this rule of thumb over the years, and it doesn't just apply to placements. Advertising platforms are designed so that their default settings maximize reach and therefore your ad spend, not your lead quality. This isn't a scandal, it's their business model. Your task is to check every automated recommendation against your own target audience instead of accepting it blindly. In B2B, where the target audience is small and specific, precision almost always trumps reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does meta ads even work in B2B?
Yes, as a supplementary channel, especially for visibility and retargeting within a target group that uses Instagram and Facebook privately. However, the expectation should be different than with Google: Meta generates attention, but rarely direct purchase inquiries.
Why not just let Meta do Advantage+ if it recommends it?
Because the automated system optimizes for reach and spending, not for lead quality. It can work for large B2C budgets, but for small, niche B2B target groups, it dilutes the budget.
Should Stories really remain active?
Yes, as long as the creative is suitable or at least clearly displayed. Those who only have feed formats can also deactivate Stories and start with pure feed placements.
Are there similar standard traps on other platforms?
Yes, every platform has it. On LinkedIn, for example, it's the audience extension feature, which is enabled by default and works on the same principle.
I have described the LinkedIn equivalent of this standard trap here: Turn off LinkedIn Ads Audience Expansion. Or in Analysis discussion Go directly through your meta setup.
