LinkedIn Ads Audience Expansion: Why you should turn off the default checkbox

HomeInsights LinkedIn Ads Audience Expansion: Why you should turn off the default checkbox

LinkedIn Ads has a default setting that will eat up your budget. I've been running LinkedIn Ads for years, and in every new account, the first thing I uncheck is "Audience Expansion.".

What Audience Expansion Actually Does

Your targeting is usually deliberately narrow, for example, CEOs in SaaS companies with over 200 employees. Audience expansion adds a second, significantly broader dataset to the campaign auction system, which is often completely irrelevant to your offer. Your budget is spread across more people, and the cost per lead increases without you noticing it at first glance.

Why the setting is active by default

In B2B, precision wins, not range.

LinkedIn markets this feature as "increased reach." At its core, it's a mechanism designed to boost your ad spend, which is why it's enabled by default. To be fair, LinkedIn has fewer of these default traps than other platforms. But this one noticeably drains the budget of many B2B accounts, especially since B2B target audiences are often small and specific to begin with.

What I check in every new account

Audience expansion is one of a short list of standard settings that I check first in every account I take over, before even looking at bids or ad copy. Disable it, control your targeting yourself, and allocate your budget where it belongs based on your own definition of your target audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose significant range by switching it off?

You lose reach among people outside your defined targeting. In B2B, this is usually intentional, because this additional reach rarely translates into actual leads.

Are there similar default settings in Google Ads?

Yes, for example, automatically activated display network extensions or broad keyword matches without corresponding exclusions. The basic principle is the same: more reach at the expense of precision.

How quickly will I notice a difference after deactivating it?

Usually within the first one to two weeks, as soon as enough new data is available without the extended target group.

Should I also check this for campaigns that are already running well?

Especially there. A well-running campaign with audience expansion enabled often performs significantly more efficiently with correct targeting.
